Best of What's Next 2009: Jenny Owen Youngs [Musician]

Hometown: Montclair, N.J.

Album: Transmitter Failure
For Fans Of: Ingrid Michaelson, Neko Case, Feist

Longhaired, guitar-toting waifs aren’t hard to come by these days, but with a biting sense of humor, a voice sweet as spun sugar and at least one Nelly cover under her belt, Jenny Owen Youngs defies pigeonholing. Her second LP, Transmitter Failure, grandly sweeps from sultry jazz-infused numbers to jangling banjo-backed tunes, and Youngs leads a smorgasboard of supporting instruments with a hidden sting of wit at every twist and turn.

Listen to "Led to the Sea" by Jenny Owen Youngs:

What’s Next? “If the rock gods hear my prayers, maybe they will finally allow me to release and tour in Japan,” Youngs says. Barring that, she’ll tour the U.S. and Europe for the rest of 2009 before heading into the studio to record her third LP with producer Dan Romer. She also plans to schedule a wisdom-tooth extraction. “Possibly on stage,” she says. “Why not?”
