Robert Zemeckis and Disney to Remake Yellow Submarine...in 3D

In a rather unexpected move, Robert Zemeckis has signed on to remake the Beatles' trippy 1968 film, Yellow Submarine, as a 3D performance capture film with Disney, scheduled for release in 2012.

Zemeckis' previous forays into the performance-capture technique have led to some decidedly creepy-looking characters, as in 2007's Beowulf and the kid-centered, but no less bizarre-looking, 2004 Christmas release The Polar Express.

The latest in a spate of Beatles-centered products over the past few years (the upcoming Rock Band, the Cirque du Soleil show "LOVE," the movie Across the Universe) is apparently awaiting the rights to the 16 Beatles songs featured in the film.

Sure, the original film featured friendly cartoon characters and villains known as the Blue Meanies, but it was also heralded at the time as an LSD-friendly experiment into musical self-promotion. In cahoots with Disney, Zemeckis will likely relegate it to a kid-friendly film centered around the gimmick of making it in 3D.

Still on our personal wish list: a Sesame Street version of Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas and A Clockwork Orange on Ice. Fingers crossed!
