Terrence Malick's Tree of Life Gets Christmas Day Release

Terrence Malick’s The Tree of Life will open in American theaters on Dec. 25, according the fall movie preview in Entertainment Weekly.

The release will likely be limited at first with a wider berth in January, the pattern followed by Malick’s The New World and The Thin Red Line. Earlier reports have said the film will screen in at least some IMAX theaters, but that hasn’t been confirmed, and in any case the movie would have to contend with James Cameron’s Avatar in the same timeframe.

The movie stars Brad Pitt and Sean Penn and will involve a family in the 1950s. There are other rumors floating around, but Malick’s movies can be elusive even after you’ve seen them, so it’s hard to say what to expect.
