Movie montages with music (or AMV's as they're more commonly known on the seedy mash-up circuits of the internet) are almost universally awful. More often than not, they take a song from a derivative, pathos-mining butt-rock band and set it to a sequence of scenes from a hyper-violent movie. The kind of thoughtless crap that only required the author to tear themselves away from World of Warcraft long enough to slap a Linkin Park track on top of a three-minute clip of Underworld. And they're popular. Reeeeeeeally popular.
But every now and then, the mash-up gods send forth their digital riders from the internet equivalent of Asgard to bless us with a movie/music mashup that's just plain great. And lo, such a mash-up has come in the form of scenes from Hayao Miyazaki's recent movie Ponyo set to the tune of The Lonely Island's "I'm On a Boat".
The pairing works well thematically, and there are some ironic yuks in a not-safe-for-work song playing over a wholesome children's movie. But this mash-up is particularly awesome for the level of craftsmanship that drips from every shot; the video's creator did an amazing job synching up the lyrics and audio with the imagery playing out on-screen.
So for your consideration, dear reader, the Ponyo/"I'm On a Boat" mashup:
