Dexter: The Complete Third Season

Friendship is a double-edged razor blade in slow-burning season

Dexter is perfect for TV on DVD—the near-seamless plotline makes waiting a week between episodes almost unbearable. Dexter, a blood-spatter analyst for the Miami police department who also happens to be a serial killer, is still working hard, killing murderers, and developing more personal relationships than are comfortable for his cold heart. Season Three takes a welcome break from the stalk-murder-go-home formula of the first two seasons—this one focuses on Dexter’s intimacy with his fiancĂ©e Rita, dying family friend Camilla and new friend, the lovable yet frightening Assistant District Attorney Miguel Prado, fantastically played by Jimmy Smits. Dexter’s first true friend gets a little too close, leading to fewer quick thrills than usual but an ever-building intensity. Meanwhile, the supporting characters are dealing with the death of a colleague—and justifying the show’s “police drama” classification.
