The web series that Joss Whedon credits as the inspiration for Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog will come out on DVD Sept. 29.
The Guild, written by and starring Felicia Day, is the story of a down-on-her-luck woman who takes solace in her online gaming community, only to find that her devotion is punished when one of them misinterprets it and winds up on her real-life doorstep. She tries to remedy the situation by bringing all the guild members together in person, with awkward results.
The DVD will feature the first two seasons of the show, along with bonus materials and an exclusive insert of a gaming glossary and a note from Day herself. Day originally pitched the idea as a pilot to network television, which thought it was too specific a niche for broadcast. Yet more proof that the execs don't understand their market, the web series has since earned multiple awards and millions of fans.
The Guild was once an underdog in financial terms, but its large fan base became its saving grace. For Season Two, the producers turned to fans for donations and the response was overwhelming. When one fan donated $100, Day actually e-mailed him to be sure it wasn't a mistake. It wasn't. And The Guild's website now boasts that the show has 25 million viewers. Season Three was commissioned by Microsoft (though Day still retains the rights).
Episode One of Season Three of The Guild became available on Sept. 1 on XBox, streamed from MSN, and as a Zune download. Episode Two will be available on all these platforms next week. While waiting for the new DVD and its bonus materials to be available, you can catch up with Seasons One and Two on the show's website.
