Happy 107th Birthday, First Science-Fiction Movie Ever!

One hundred seven years ago, the science-fiction film genre was born. On Sept. 1, 1902, French filmmaker George Méliès released La voyage dans la Lune (A Trip to the Moon), loosely based on the novels The First Men in the Moon by H.G. Wells and From the Earth to the Moon by Jules Verne.

The film's editing and special effects appear beyond dated to our modern biases, but Méliès movie probed uncharted cinematic territory, especially with animation. If you've got 10 minutes to spare at the end of the work day, kick back and enjoy a delightful turn-of-the-century curio:
