Like Chaka Khan's 1978 hit "I'm Every Woman," some cultural cornerstones unite individuals into one humanity-affirming identity. With the new iPhone application "I Am T-Pain," people of all races, creeds and sexes can once again come together, the time under the banner of Auto-Tune.
The app is available through iTunes for $2.99. That means, for less than it costs for a small coffee, your voice can sound as good (read: like a sexy robot) as T-Pain. Who says we can't get by in the recession?
Plus, all the stars are doing it! Seriously, watch this:
As if Jay-Z hadn't been slapped in the face enough last week by early reviews of his underwhelming Blueprint 3, T-Pain just had to take it one step further. It's the role that T-Pain has settled into nicely: the mechanically-altered voice reminding us not to take everything so seriously. T-Pain has never pretended to be Nas (or even Jay-Z, for that matter) and he doesn't want to; he is at our service to provide some fun, mindless and endlessly catchy pop songs. That's it. And in a hip-hop landscape full of dudes trying to prove who's the most genuine, it's refreshing to see T-Pain acknowledging that he's in on his own joke.
Hell, wasn't that the whole point of "I'm On a Boat"?
