Whether we like it or not, Hollywood has adapted all sorts of video and computer games for film, such as the side scroller (Super Mario Bros.), the first person shooter (Doom), the RPG (Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within) and even the fighting variety (Mortal Kombat). Next on the list: the god game.
Twentieth Century Fox and Electronic Arts are collaborating to make a Spore movie, based on the game created by Will Wright. It will be adapted as a CG-animated cartoon with Ice Age's Chris Wedge set to direct, according to Variety. The film will be produced by EA and Blue Sky Studios, which is credited for animating the Ice Age franchise, Robots and the their next project, Rio.
Greg Erb and Jason Oremland, writers for Disney's upcoming The Princess and the Frog and Paramount's The Return of King Doug, are set to pen the script for the movie. Given the structure of the virtually plotless game, a metaverse where players create and design their own creatures and environments, there looks to be plenty of creative space for the production team.
The Spore game was released in September 2008, and has since sold more than 3.2 million copies.
