The U.K. is using The Simpsons as an unlikely platform to promote healthy eating and fight obesity among British families.
As part of their Change4Life campaign, the British Department of Health began running ads at the opening of sponsored episodes of the long-running series on U.K. TV network Channel 4. The ads, made by the creators of Wallace and Gromit, show the Simpson family crammed onto their sofa, eating ice cream and chips, reminiscent of the standard opening. But then the junk food suddenly transforms into healthy fruits and vegetables. The ads will cost the government £640,000 (about $1 million). The campaign began running yesterday (Oct. 5) on Channel 4 and will last until Christmas Day 2009.
