Joss Whedon‘s musical-comedy chops are well-known. He directed the hugely popular musical episode of Buffy (“Once More, With Feeling” in 2001) and last year’s much-lauded Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog. Now he’s using his musical skills to guest-direct an episode of Fox’s breakout new show Glee.
As a self-professed fan of Glee, this will be a labor of love for Whedon. On his blog he writes, “I’m going to do my best not to gush like a fanboy for eight straight days on set.”
Although this shift in focus is not necessarily the death knell for his ratings-challenged Dollhouse, Whedon is cautious about the show’s future. He writes, “We’re not exactly saving all the good stuff for [episodes] 14-22, but nobody’s closed the door. If D’House suddenly busts wide, huzzah, we’ll still bring it, and I’ll still go and direct an episode of Glee.” No word yet if Fox will renew Dollhouse for another season.
Meanwhile, Whedon will undoubtedly make an interesting episode of Glee a show without general creepiness or bloodshed. He proved he can direct upbeat comedies, without the sci-fi bent, when he helmed two episodes of The Office, “Business School” and “Branch Wars,” in 2007.
