Tom Cruise Revealed as Inspiration for Bale's American Psycho
Christian Bale’s turn as Patrick Bateman in American Psycho is already frightening, but it took on a whole new life recently when we learned of his inspiration. According to director Mary Harron, Bale was working to explore the character when he caught and appearance by Tom Cruise on David Letterman and got all the inspiration he needed.
“And then one day he called me and he had been watching Tom Cruise on David Letterman,” she told BlackBook, “and he just had this very intense friendliness with nothing behind the eyes, and he was really taken with this energy.” Many observers have also pointed out that Cruise made an appearance in the original Bret Easton Ellis novel.
Why Harron felt compelled to drop that particular bombshell nearly 10 years after the movie’s release is anyone’s guess, as is how Bale’s PR people plan to handle the fallout since he has gone on to be one of the biggest movie stars in the world. But as far as phantom celebrity cameos go, this definitely beats the Johnny Depp-Keith Richards thing in Pirates of the Caribbean.
