Zac Brown Band to Host Georgia Theatre Benefit Show

Zac Brown Band is looking to restore the glory of its onetime musical stomping grounds by hosting a benefit concert on Oct. 30 for Athens, Ga.’s recently decommissioned Georgia Theatre. They will be accompanied by Little Big Town, Joey + Rory, Shawn Mullins, Aslyn and Oliver Wood.

The Georgia Theatre, formerly a movie palace before entering its true glory days as a music venue, was a launchpad for Athens natives like R.E.M., The B-52’s and Drive By Truckers. After the building was gutted by a fire earlier this year, the black and white marquee drolly but poignantly displayed the word “OUCH,” a response to the devastation that resonates with the many musicians that played inside its now soot-stained walls.

“My band and many others have come up playing there,” Brown said in a statement. “That building means far more to us, and the community, then its brick and mortar foundation. We want to make sure that it gets proper funding so we can rebuild it better than it was.”

The benefit show will take place at the Fox Theatre in Atlanta, Ga. Tickets are priced at $100 each and are available through Ticketmaster. Proceeds for the show will go to The Georgia Theatre Rehabilitation Fund, which also accepts donations online.
