Emmy nominated Flight of the Conchords co-star Jemaine Clement has been frank lately in discussing the New Zealand duo’s future with the show, telling Reuters “it very likely might not” return for a third season due to its strenuous work demands.
“You go through this phase, or several phases, where you want to do this thing,” Clement told Paste in a recent interview. “You do it for sort of a long time and you’re exposed to it too much, and then you hate it more than anything. And then eventually you get bored, then you have a few ideas, and then you do it again. I still think we’re in the hating-that-idea phase. We might do something. We haven’t really decided if we’re doing any more things. It could go either way, I think.”
Clement’s time has become all the more precious with his breakthrough into the film world, his most recent role being the vain sci-fi author in Gentlemen Broncos. Before making any big decisions about the HBO series, Clement said he would have to discuss matters with co-star Bret McKenzie and Conchords director James Robin.
Clement stated that “within a month I think there will probably be an HBO press release to say either way if we’re going to keep working on it.”

Not terribly shocking given everything we've read about how the second season was far more of a slog than the first (and required the writing of brand new material that, by most accounts, was not as successful as the first season).
But I'm sure Jemaine isn't using "Gentlemen Broncos" as a basis for whether or not to move on, given that the film's wide release has effectively been canceled by Fox Searchlight due to the overwhelmingly negative reviews and poor attendance (though his performance is the one bright spot cited in most writeups I've read).
