With Bitte Orca and “Knotty Pine” as proof, Dirty Projectors have never been more accessible.
But as previously unreleased B-side “Ascending Melody” shows, the former Paste Band of the Week has hardly stripped itself of its characteristic eccentricities: staggered vocals, twittering guitars and yes, as-cen-ding me-lo-dies. Just watch out for those handclaps; they lead to a haunting place.
“Ascending Melody” is one of two B-sides enclosed with the band’s Temecula Sunrise EP, a U.K.-only release via Domino. The song can also be heard at Pretty Much Amazing.
