Although it was expected that Michael Jackson’s posthumous concert flick, This Is It, was going to bring in an audience still reeling and confused from MJ’s untimely passing, a $100 million gross worldwide (in just its first week, no less) is downright impressive.
In a small victory for good music everywhere, it should be noted that This Is It grossed about $1.4 million more domestically in its first week than Miley Cyrus’ Best of Both Worlds Concert movie, and that flick had 3D graphics going for it.
The King of Pop, ladies and gents, remains firmly seated in his throne.
Columbia Pictures, which originally planned to keep the movie in theaters for a limited two-week run, has decided to extend in-theater time until Nov. 29, meaning it’s likely that This Is It will become the highest grossing concert flick of all time.
