This year marks the twentieth anniversary of The Simpsons, and the award-winning animated series shows little sign of slowing down. Over the years it has garnered more than its fair share of praise and celebrity fans, among them Oscar-nominated documentarian Morgan Spurlock (Super Size Me).
To commemorate the anniversary, Fox will air a TV special produced and directed by Spurlock that is somewhat confoundingly—though certainly enthusiastically—titled, The Simpsons 20th Anniversary Special – In 3-D! On Ice!. The special, which will neither take place on ice nor be presented in 3-D, will air on Thursday, Jan. 14, 2010, almost one month after the show’s 20th birthday; the original pilot episode first aired on Fox on Sunday, Dec. 17, 1989.
The special will appear a few days after the series airs its 450th episode, “Once Upon a Time in Springfield,” with guest star Anne Hathaway.
Spurlock will also host a twentieth anniversary sneak peek as part of the bonus features on the The Simpsons’ Season 20 Blu-Ray Disc and DVD, released on Jan. 12, two days before the airdate of the special.
