Miramax Studios Closes its Doors

Miramax Studios Closes its Doors

After more than 30 years as a prominent presence in the film world, Miramax officially shutters today, following much speculation that the company was heading in that direction. Owned by Disney since 1993, the studio achieved fame with titles such as The English Patient and Shakespeare In Love.

Ending today, Miramax left behind 80 employees as well as six movies awaiting distribution. Miramax was founded in 1979 by brothers Harvey and Bob Weinstein, who named the company after their parents, Max and Miriam. Although the brothers abandoned Miramax to establish the Weinstein Company in 2005, Harvey remains impacted by the closing. “I’m feeling very nostalgic right now,” he said in a statement. “I know the movies made on my and my brother Bob’s watch will live on…Miramax has some brilliant people working within the organization and I know they will go on to do great things in the industry.”
