Those of us who have come to love the dysfunctional hilarity of ABC’s new series Modern Family can breathe a sigh of relief: The show will be back in 2010. ABC confirmed the renewal of Modern Family, along with The Middle and Cougar Town, also 2009 additions to the small screen.
This trio of shows is a reflection of an ABC experiment to introduce comedies to Wednesday night, and it’s obviously been a success. In fact, Modern Family was the most-watched new comedy last fall, drawing in a whopping 10.2 million viewers during last week’s episode alone. And The Middle and Cougar Town are holding their own as well, boasting female leads Patricia Heaton and Courteney Cox, respectively.
Recently, the network also moved Ugly Betty from its Friday-night slot (where it had been struggling) to 10 p.m. on Wednesday, hoping some of the energy (and numbers) will remain consistent throughout the mid-week night.
