Rocky Votolato is emerging from more than two years of personal hibernation with his third studio album, now set for a Feb. 23 release through Barsuk.
Even as his sophomore record, 2007’s The Brag & Cuss, garnered generally favorable reviews, the soft-spoken singer-songwriter’s lifelong battle with depression and anxiety continued on. It soon interfered with his ability to write and tour, causing Votolato to shut himself into his apartment for more than a year.
But True Devotion marks the end of both his personal retreat and his emotional struggles. It exemplifies what he found in his studies of history, theology and existential philosophy, and its title song expresses a new sense of enlightenment: “True devotion and true virtue / Will hold you at the center / As the waves crash over.”
Although recorded almost solely by Votolato, True Devotion also features production by longtime collaborator Casey Foubert (Sufjan Stevens, David Bazan) and John Goodmanson (The Blood Brothers, Sleater-Kinney). Post-release, Votolato will play two solo acoustic shows:
24 – New York, N.Y. @ Mercury Lounge
26 – Chicago, Ill. @ Schubas Tavern
