Designer Alexander McQueen: 1969-2010

Iconic British fashion designer Alexander McQueen—who had attracted attention not just from the fashion world but from the Queen herself, who dubbed him Commander of the British Empire for his fashion leadership in 2003—was found dead in his London home today. McQueen was 40 years old.

Sources are reporting that McQueen’s death was suicide by hanging. The designer reportedly has been battling depression since his mother’s Feb. 2 death.

McQueen’s creativity extended far beyond clothes themselves, and his shows were known for their highly dramatic qualities. He was as much of a hit in America as in Europe, celebrities such as Lady Gaga, Sandra Bullock and Cameron Diaz all wearing his designs. In November, Paste named him the #2 fashion designer of the last decade.
