High praise has been piling up across the pond for a small group of musicians who are pushing the English folk form forward. This spring, Jim Moray, Trembling Bells, The Unthanks, Gadarene, Olivia Chaney and Jackie Oates will bring their mix of psychedelia, rock and traditional British folk stateside under the tour-showcase name, Looking for a New England, giving Americans a glimpse into the burgeoning UK folk scene.
Sponsored by British Underground, a publicly funded music development program that has sponsored shows at SXSW for eight years running, the Looking for a New England crew will stop by New York’s Webster Hall Studio March 16 before a March 19 SXSW appearance at St. David’s Church. The brief tour is an effort on the part of British Underground in partnership with the Arts Council England and a number of musical tastemakers such as Mojo magazine to tout what they see as some of Britain’s most valuable cultural capital outside their home country.
Hear what all the fuss is about for yourself on Looking for a New England’s MySpace page, which includes songs from various acts on the tour.
