He’s Popeye the sailor man and he’s coming to 3D. Variety reports that Sony Pictures is bringing the beloved, tattooed cartoon to theaters and hopping aboard the 3D bandwagon in the process.
Spiderman producer Avi Arad has signed on to produce Popeye, and he’s excited. “I literally started singing the famous Popeye song (after securing the rights),” Arad said. “What always blew me away is the level of the animation. It was so beautiful and unbelievably detailed.”
Fellow Popeye lover Mike Jones will pen the movie’s script. “I’m an unabashed, lifelong Popeye fan,” he said. “Introducing this squinty-eyed sailor to a new generation also means reintroducing him to those who, like me, grew up with him.”
The spinach-loving character—created by E.C. Segar—first debuted in 1929. Popeye’s most recent incarnation was a live-action film in 1980 starring Robin Williams.
