Tom Hanks in Talks to Produce Movie Version of Green Day's American Idiot Musical

Even though Green Day’s American Idiot musical hasn’t yet seen its Broadway premiere (that’s set to occur on April 20), Tom Hanks may be ready to take the production to the silver screen. According to, Hanks and his Playtone partner Gary Goetzman are interested in producing the film version of the show.

So continues the musical-turned-movie craze that has swept Hollywood, with flicks like RENT, Mamma Mia! (also Playtone-produced), Hairspray and Chicago drawing positive responses from audiences, if not always critics.

American Idiot uses songs from Green Day’s 2004 album of the same name—with very little spoken narrative in between—to tell the story of three small-town guys trying to find themselves. One joins the Army, one acquires a drug habit and the third unexpectedly becomes a young dad.
