Andrew W.K. and the Song that Earned Him a Juvenile Restraining Order

Never underestimate the power and lasting impact of adolescent humiliation. Just ask Andrew W.K. Yesterday, he released “My Destiny,” a song he penned while crushing hard on a girl from his Ann Arbor high school at age 17. “I’m deeply humiliated and embarrassed at the thought of anyone hearing it,” he wrote. This coming from the guy who recently regaled tens of thousands of Twitter followers with, “I just went to the bathroom in my pants. It was an accident and a real mess.”

Turns out, “My Destiny” is pretty cringe-worthy, even after all these years. Featuring the lyric, “Drove past your doorway/I don’t want to cause you harm/Harm, that’s what you’re in for/if you don’t open your door,” the song earned the partier a juvenile restraining order when its subject got her hands on a copy and called the police.

The song, sung by an oddly mature-sounding teenage Andrew W.K. is sparse, a mixture of ominous organ and the kind of raw earnestness only someone too young to vote could muster. “Three months ago, I was advised by my personal manager and life coach to finally let people hear it,” Andrew wrote in The Guardian. It can’t be easy to show the world how trite and cheesy you were as a teen. Thanks for sharing, Andrew.
