Helen Mirren has joined the cast of Arthur.
The Oscar-winning actress—well known for playing matriarchal film roles—will play a nanny to British comedian Russell Brand in a reimagining of the 1981 comedy. Modern Family director Jason Winer is helming the project, which will be produced by Chris Bender, Larry Brezner and Kevin McCormick.
The original film told the tale of Arthur—played by Dudley Moore—who turns to a long-term companion for help when his family threaten to cut off his inheritance if he doesn’t marry a woman he has no interest in.
Mirren’s character was originally played by John Gielgud, who won the Best Supporting Actor Oscar for his performance as butler Hobson in the movie.
The movie remake was scripted by Peter Baynham specifically for Brand, who has previously starred in comedies St Trinian’s and Forgetting Sarah Marshall.
Mirren has a number of films coming up in 2010, including recently completed movies Love Ranch and The Tempest. She is currently filming action thriller Red with Bruce Willis and Morgan Freeman.
Arthur is due for release in 2011.
