Steve Reid, veteran jazz drummer, died last night in New York. He was 66. News of Reid’s passing came via Reid’s friend, DJ Gilles Peterson, who Tweeted it earlier today.
“Devastated by the news that my friend drummer Steve Reid passed away last night in New York – a true inspiration who will be greatly missed,” Peterson wrote.
Reid was a longtime staple of the jazz and soul music; his collaborators include Miles Davis, James Brown, Fela Kuti and, most recently, Four Tet (Kieran Hebden). Watch a video of the prolific drummer performing with Four Tet below:
