Everybody’s favorite satirical news source is joining forces with America’s funniest television network. Comedy Central has picked up a new series from The Onion called the Onion Sports Network, based on the online video series of the same name. The network has ordered 10 episodes of the scripted sports news series, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Comedy Central expects The Onion will deliver the same hilarity readers have come to know and love. “They will skewer the sports world, and the media coverage of sports, with the same sharpness we’ve seen applied to the world of politics and popular culture,” said the network’s head of original programming Kent Alterman.
Steve Hannah, CEO of Onion, Inc. had this to say about the pairing, “The Onion is the biggest, most fearless, most influential news organization in the free world,” adding, “And we see a collaboration with Comedy Central as the next logical step in the expansion of the Onion Sports Network’s hard-hitting coverage.”
Onion Sports Network will premiere on Comedy Central early next year.
