Ponderosa Stomp has long been a stopover for “the unsung heroes of rock and soul,” taking place on weeknights between the two weekends of New Orleans’ Jazz Fest and celebrating the sidemen and cult figures that the larger event overlooks. Now, nine years in, Jazz Fest’s little brother is all grown up and moved to its own weekend date the 24th and 25th of September.
“We feel strongly that moving the festival away from April will have a positive impact,” founder Ira “Dr. Ike” Padnos said in a statement. “The move to a weekend allows more local and regional music fans to attend, without having work looming the next day… The move helps establish the Stomp as a destination event in its own right, allowing for its continued growth and success.”
Lined up to help move the Stomp along the road to success are this year’s headliners, King of Twang Duane Eddy, singer/songwriter Sugar Pie DeSanto, Chicano rock band Thee Midniters, truck driving music great Red Simpson, rarely seen Southern musician Joe South and 60’s proto-surf rockers The Trashmen. For the third year running, Ponderosa Stomp will offer a music history conference, film series and record hop during the day.
To buy tickets for the event, call Louisiana Travel Services at (866) 655-1889 weekdays between 8:30 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. They’ll even help you find accommodations in and around New Orleans for the weekend of the festivities.
