Steve Carell’s recent statement that he might be leaving The Office at the end of next season has caused shock waves among the NBC-sitcom’s audience of devoted fans. According to Newser, Carell told BBC Radio that his contract expires after next season and “that will probably be my last year.”
Does The Office, which was only just named one of the ten best sitcoms by us here at Paste, stand a chance without Michael Scott? It’s not our decision to make, but something tells us Scranton, Pa., just wouldn’t be the same without the world’s most clueless boss.

Oh I really hope they don't try to continue after he leaves. It would be like a shark jumping over a water skier jumping over a shark.
this show has lost its way starting at the end of season 5 and season 6 is absolutely horrendous and not funny. we can only hope that carell does leave so and they can end this series before they ruin it. the show is cute and obvious now, not awkward and subtle like the old office.
NO ONE can leave The Office!! I love it too much for any of them to leave. (I could watch it forever... even if it is "obvious" as Adam S. says, it is still one of the best shows on TV.)
you know what C B? you think you're an office fan, i'm a crazed fanatic of this show. have you been a fan since the beginning or are you one of the "new" fans who started watching when it got popular?
the first 5 seasons i lived and breathed this show.....then something happened. in season 6 the writing got lazy. the characters changed completely. the humor got dumbed down. if they could fix these then i wish the show to go on forever. however, i believe in leaving on a high note rather than fading away or possibly ruining a legacy. i know a dead horse when i see one, and this dead horse has been beaten TO DEATH. . . .
Oh, I've definitely been watching every episode since episode #1! I think it is a miracle too. It is not something I would have normally watched. But on some chance I watched the first episode and have rarely missed one since. I agree the show is less funny recently. The last episode I think was the episode I laughed the least. There is just something about these characters where they seem like real people. It would almost be like breaking up a family if any of them left. And I mean ANY of them leaving would bother me: Oscar, Kevin, Phyllis, Creed...
i agree with you about how the characters feel so real and like you know them personally. the show is not just "less funny", its completely different from two seasons ago! none of the characters act the same anymore.
my beef is with the writers of the show: why did they change all the characters personalities/attitudes?? what really bothers me now with the show is how jim isn't coy/sly/clever anymore and isn't funny. same for michael and dwight, they're not funny in the least. now, none of the characters hold anything back, they say what's on their mind. especially pam, michael, jim, and dwight. which=no more awkward silences or actions. and don't get me started on how half of the characters do those cheesy/lame voice expressions in season 6. what is up with that? even JIM does them!!! would he ever do that in season 1-4. . . .no! it just really irks me as a fan of the show that they are stooping to this level of humor just to cater to the general public/audience.
that's why they should end the show. i feel that the show has different writers now than before (i'm not sure if that's true, i need to look into it).
i used to laugh at this show with pain and agony from how hilarious, crude, and awkward it was. now, i watch with pain and agony and look down and shake my head at how horrendous and lame the show has gotten.
the office R.I.P.
The show has lost a lot of nuance. But can we not label season 4 as being that good...i don't fault season 4 for being not that good since it was the strike year and every show was kinda down. Season 4 had good moments but it was not good. I am of the opinion that the wedding earlier this season was effing amazing, and while the show may not be funny for the same reasons its still funny to me. It's like how bands evolve over time. The show may not be what it was, or even as good as it was, but it can still be good and a lot better then a lot of stuff on television at the moment.
yeah, I agree the characters aren't acting the same. Like with Jim -- he is so serious now. I miss his goofiness.
The show is still pretty funny though, especially compared to a lot of other funny shows, just not as funny as it once was.
