Watch Sufjan Stevens' Experimental Film with Live Soundtrack from Members of The National

The National and Sufjan Stevens have become quite cozy over the years, with Stevens guesting on Boxer and The National’s upcoming High Violet. Last month’s Big Ears Festival found brothers and National guitarists Bryce and Aaron Dessner scratching Stevens’ back by providing a live soundtrack to the Illinoisemaker’s experimental film, Destroy All Those Irritating Memories (via Pitchfork). Thank goodness someone bootlegged a video of the performance!

The film is a string of “long exposure stills from old TV shows [Sufjan’s] stepdad had given him as a kid,” according to a blogger who was there, and mostly winds up looking like a watered-down version of the iTunes visualizer. It’s really the Dessner Bros. moody, ambient score that makes it worth checking out, which you can do below. But skip the first four minutes, wherein Stevens mumbles incoherently, presumably about the film, and the screen is washed in black.
