We’ve been looking forward to Christopher Nolan’s first project since The Dark Knight for about a year now, as Nolan pieced together his cast and crew for a film whose storyline no one seems to understand. The film’s cryptic teaser trailer and a second, longer, cheerfully incoherent trailer did not reveal a decipherable plot, but seemed to fuse the mind-games of Nolan’s Memento with the effects of The Matrix and the breathtaking CG-embellished cityscapes of The Dark Knight.
These glimpses of the film, together with its stacked cast of Leonardo DiCaprio, Ellen Page, Michael Caine, Marion Cotillard, Cillian Murphy, Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Ken Watanabe, were enough to land it on our list of summer blockbusters we can’t wait to see.
With the release of a third trailer (which, it should be noted, is twice as long as each of the first two), the curtain has been pulled back (if only slightly) on the film’s plot. It seems that DiCaprio plays a special kind of security agent who mines the content of humans’ dreams for secrets, which he then steals. But apparently dabbling in the subconscious causes some problems. Namely, explosions, emotional breakdowns, badass mid-air fighting and collapsing buildings.
Watch all three trailers, below, and see if you can figure out what Nolan’s got up his sleeve for the July 16 IMAX release.
