Alas, things aren’t all that sunny over in Happy Town. The ABC show, which premiered just two weeks ago, has already been killed after drawing in a disappointing 4.5 million viewers for its inaugural episodes.
If you’re one of the apparent few who are already hooked on the show (which followed a string of unsolved kidnappings in a Minnesota town), you’ll still get to see a half dozen more episodes. The network will air a third show this week, followed by five more beginning June 2.

This is why I don't bother to watch new shows.
even though the signs were there before it ever aired that this was destined to happen, i still watched the first two eps.
for a show as dark as this, it had zero chance of success running after two straight hours of comedies. it would have been better served following Lost, V, or Flashforward, but Cougartown?
But will we get to find out who the Magic Man is?! I mean, is there any way it's not the dude from Jurassic Park? Nah, that's too obvious.
The networks these days make me sad. Some of the biggest shows that have existed started off with REALLY SMALL audiences - like Seinfeld, Friends, Cheers, The Cosby Show, The Office, etc.
Now, if you don't have at least 10 million people watching consistently, you're done after 2 shows.
This is also why cable television is making such a comeback; they give shows time to develop and grow as an audience.
Heh. I actually dropped this show after last week's episode. Could barely make it through the first 30 minutes. It just didn't grab me.
This sucks, you get interested in a show, and they cancel it. That's why I'm no longer going to start watching new shows anymore until they're on for at least 6 months, because hopefully they'll stay for good. I've watched show after show only to find out they're cancelled! Give them a chance, instead of doing this and getting people hooked, then taking them off! How do you expect to keep viewers doing this!
Everytime I find a show I like it gets cancelled. Ugly Betty-gone, The Unusuals gone, Life gone (NBC), The Black Donnleys(NBC) gone, .... It seems like all the shows I enjoy are on the same night and time so I record. Pretty soon its going to be all reality shows on the local networks. That is when I cancel my satellite. Give a show a chance! Nothing is going to compete with Law and Order SVU.
I don’t think the show is bad at all, but you don’t start a new show during NBA/NHL playoffs. The people watching one or both of those will just do like I did, watch this show online. I think if they took in account all of the other people watching this show online there is a lot more people viewing this show than they realize
i really like this show! i don't understand why the networks get people hooked and just because there are not 'ENOUGH' viewers, they cancel and those of us that liked the show, well we are just "SOL'!! maybe another ntework will pick it up, like TNT, TBS, FX. i agree with nate, factor in the viewers online and then see how many!
what about people that DVR shows? I have to DVR most of the show that I like to watch including this one!! does that mean I don't count? :/
Wasn't this an 8 episode mini series anyways? I don't think they are canceling anything
What ever happened to patience? Remember Star Trek?
It was going WAY to slow! It was interesting but what they should have shown in about 10 minutes took an hour. No wonder!
Nice, figures....I liked it from the start, so 2 episodes gives them an idea? they keep junk like Idol and Survivor on but not quality shows...then again...more people watch Idol...what does that say about the american viewers?
Ah man....just when I thought the show was going to have a good run! I hate getting into a show and then it just ends. Remember October Road (also with Geoff Stults and Jay Paulson)?? And Men in Trees with Abraham Benrubi??
Wow!! I hate this.. I was getting into the show. Regular TV channels, plus so so many commercials are the reason I watch very little boob-tube. Too bad because I think it was an interesting show, but who cares what we think we just watch it right???
The problem was you didn't know what the show was about so it's obvious it would take time to discover. The show's intended audience is scared away by titles such as "happy" town. It should have been called "Franklin's Town", and then maybe it'd be clear it's not one of the many female-oriented shows on the airwaves. The show had a large audience, but mostly older women and middle-age men. Everything else is all-age women and old geezer men.
It sounds like Flash Forward will be canceled also. I think it would have been given a better chance if it aired after Lost was over. They should give it another chance: re-air the first season over the summer and put it in a new time slot in the fall.
hey guys,
If you watch it on your dvr I believe that still counts as a view, but that's a good point they should also record online viewings. I was enjoying the show and sad to see it leave. I hope they conclude it at least.
I do not like the way programs are aired anymore. I do not like reality TV. I like to watch sitcoms that will take my mind off the everyday stresses. But you keep moving it here and there that we don't know where to look anymore and then ratings go down because we can not plan on watching the shows we like. Then you take them off the air. It use to be if you missed an episode in the fall then you can catch it in the summer. We are going to watch 6 more episodes of Happy Town, then what. Are we ever going to see the ending?
Why do they always cancel something that is just getting interesting. I hate network TV. CBS tried the series thriller with "Harper's Island". It might not have gotten the ratings but at least they let it play out. ABC should just let it play!!!!
I know what you mean.
This really sucks!!! Now I know why my husband only watches reruns on TVLand, TBS, etc. At least he knows they will not be cancelled!!!
this is so stupid... i loved this show!!!!!! i wanna know who the magic man is!!!
That show was horrible! Good riddance!
I was afraid this would happen. I like a mystery show to break up the monotony of crime and lawyer shows. Reality shows have gone too far. They suck!I always hear about ratings but how can they be measured these days with DVRs,on line watching capabilities and whatever else is out there? I rarely watch a show I haven't saved. I watch too many shows on different stations at the same time slots.I wish you would give shows more of a chance.
Woah. Seriously?! I'll be honest, when I first saw the teaser it seriously just didn't grab me. But when I watched the first 2 episodes I got hooked and the mystery seriously just reeled me in.
they always do this. I liked "the unusuals"...canceled....i liked "life on mars"...cancelled. Yet corny shows that are even worse versions of bad movies that have been done over and over survive, like "dollhouse". if dollhouse isnt cancelled it should be and leave the good shows alone.
I didn't like "Happy Town", even though I watched it everytime it came on trying to find something redeeming in it. But I felt like after canceling good shows like "Eli Stone" "Pushing Daisies" "Dirty Sexy Money" and "Better Off Ted", ABC is a network I don't trust to keep their shows on the air.
