N.W.A., the rap group that launched the careers of Dr. Dre and Ice Cube, and pretty much defined early American gangsta rap will be re-born in the 21st century on the big screen. Titled Straight Outta Compton after the band’s definitive album, the film will follow the story of the young group that included Eazy-E, a drug-dealer-turned-label-mogul who later died of AIDS, Dr. Dre, Ice Cube, MC Ren and DJ Yella.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Andrea Berloff, a white female, has been picked to pen the script about the group whose violent lyrics were often marked with misogyny. Berloff’s previous writing credits include Oliver Stone World Trade Center and The Fugees, a story about a group of soccer-playing refugees who settle in Atlanta.
The project is being produced by Dr. Dre, Ice Cube’s company Cube Vision and Eazy-E’s widow, Tomica Woods.
