Joining the ranks of members of New Pornographers with solo albums (see: Neko Case, A.C. Newman) is Kathryn Calder, who plays keyboard/piano for the band and provided vocals alongside Neko Case.
Calder has been an active musician since her teens, including stints as co-songwriter for her other band, the Immaculate Machines, in addition to working with the Pornographers. Her debut solo album, Are You My Mother?, will be released Aug. 10.
“By using found items such as Kleenex boxes and filing cabinets as percussion, an old high school trumpet, and an out of tune piano plucked backwards to add texture, Calder and Stewart [the producer] were able to create a unique soundscape for her vocals and expressive piano playing,” reads the description on Calder’s MySpace page.
Various artists Calder has previously worked with contributed to the album, including members of The New Pornographers and Ladyhawk.
Calder released a track from the album, “Slip Away,” for download. It is available via Stereogum.
