With Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time opening recently, it’s no surprise that video-game-to-movie transitions are on the mind. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the next game to get the big-screen treatment will be BioWare’s 2008 sci-fi epic, Mass Effect.
Mass Effect tells the story of Commander Shepard of spaceship the SS Normandy who races across space in an attempt to stop an ancient machine that invades the galaxy every 50,000 years to destroy organic life. The original game received heaps of praise; the sequel that was released earlier this year received even more.
Legendary Pictures—the studio behind movies like Clash of the Titans, Watchmen and The Dark Knight—picked up rights to the film. Mark Protosevich (I Am Legend) is slated to write the screenplay, which will be produced by Avi and Ari Arad and Jon Jashni. BioWare co-founders Ray Muzyka and Greg Zeschuk will executive produce the movie, as well as Casey Hudson, who was executive producer for the game. Although the project has been greenlit, it is still in the primary stages of development.
