Watch Passion Pit Cover Smashing Pumpkins

Leave it to Passion Pit to trade in strings for synths when remaking a ’90s alternative classic.

Passion Pit joins the likes of Dirty Projectors, Nas and She & Him, who all recorded songs for the Levi’s campaign in which artists cover songs by the musicians who inspired them. Their jam of choice? The Smashing Pumpkins’ orchestral 1995 hit “Tonight, Tonight.”

Passion Pit stay true to form on their glowing synth-packed cover version, and vocalist Michael Angelakos’ high-pitched sighs go several octaves above Billy Corgan’s trademark whine.

You can listen to and download the track by signing up at Levi’s.

To get a taste of the track and hear Angelakos talk about the experience, check out the “making-of” video below:

In addition to a rigorous summer tour schedule and their Pioneer Sessions recording, Angelakos and co. remixed “California Girls” by Katy Perry, and their blippy, futuristic take on it actually makes the song sort of listenable.
