E! Online reports that Steve Carell is definitely bowing out of the Office limelight after the 2010-11 season.
“I just think it’s time,” Carell said. “I want to fulfill my contract. When I first signed on I had a contract for seven seasons, and this coming year is my seventh. I just thought it was time for my character to go.”
Carell hinted that he wouldn’t be coming back when he talked to Radio BBC back in April. But he doesn’t think the show, one of Paste‘s ten best sitcoms, will suffer with his absence. "The show is great, and the ensemble is so strong, and the writers are great, so it’s just one part of that ensemble drifting off," he said. “They’ve incorporated so many new characters and so many new, great storylines that I have no doubt it’ll continue as strong if not stronger than ever.”
Although Carell seems pretty intent on moving on, no announcements about the direction of the show have been made. But what will Dunder-Mifflin be without Michael Scott and his conference room meetings, crazy office parties and clueless blunders? We admit that the magic has been waning since Jim and Pam got married and had their baby; maybe this is just the nail in the coffin of a show that hung on too long.

for all the avid/hardcore office fans since the beginning, this is great news. anyone who's been a fan since the beginning knows how bad and lame the show has gotten in season 6. i'm thinking steve carell knows the show has run its course and time to wrap it up before it gets any worse or the shows reputation gets ruined.
season 6 was a very disapointing season and nothing like the past 5 seasons. all the main characters have changed as well as the humor. i hope they don't try to keep going on without michael scott, because ultimately, the office IS michael scott. definitely one of the best tv characters of all time.
even though you kind of dislike michael for his inappropriatness/crudeness, you also have to love him and feel sympathy for the guy, cuz deep down he is a caring, feeling human being with lots of heart. that's what makes the U.S version better than the UK version, not only michael but all the characters have heart and the feeling like you personally know the characters and that they are real people who try to get by with everyday life and situations. the uk version did not have this and i did not feel any connections or sympathy with any of the characters except maybe UK jim and david brent at times.
somewhere at the end of season 5, the office lost its "spark" or "magic" and its been going downhill ever since. i just hope they end the series next season so they can give michael scott (and the show) a great deserving finale and goodbye.
Two Words: Ricky Gervais!!!!!11!!
Two words: series finale.
