At last night’s BET awards ceremony, a soul-tastic quadrupling of female vocalists helped the network honor its Lifetime Achievement Award recipient, Prince. Kicking off the Purple One’s tribute was Paste-favorite Janelle Monáe. Donning a pair of skin-tight tuxedo pants, a white ruffly shirt, and The Artist’s signature coif, Monáe couldn’t have looked more Prince-ly.
Considering the energy she brought to the performance, complete with fancy footwork, stage jumps, and screaming vocals, it’s no wonder she had His Royal Purpleness bopping in his seat. Monáe’s performance was followed by tributes from jazz singer Esperanza Spalding (“If I Was Your Girlfriend”), Alicia Keys (“Adore”) and Patti LaBelle (“Purple Rain”).
