There’s nothing like the allure of the soft scratch of vinyl. In the digital age, where Ipods seem surgically connected to our ears, the appreciation for analog mediums has obviously taken a nosedive in the face of accessible and convenient digital formats; despite this, vinyl releases are more and more common—and even threatening to outpace CD sales.
In homage to vinyl, some new reissues from old bands are dropping pretty soon. Jack White recently told the Detroit Free Press that his own studio, Third Man Records, will be reissuing the White Stripes’ first three releases on 180-gram vinyl.
“We went back in the fall and got the master tapes and cut new vinyl masters right from the tapes,” he said. “We went back and did the artwork than it had ever been done — we went back to the original photographs. It’s been really cool.”
The reissues come after Third Man has already released about 50 records, including recent sessions with Conan O’Brien and a series of other live releases. Also up for vinyl reissues are newly-reunited Desaparacidos, who will be playing a benefit concert for the American Civil Liberties Union in a show of opposition against Arizona’s SB 1070 anti-illegal immigration bill. Denver Dalley recently told The Round Table that the band is working on a reissue of 2002’s Read Music/Speak Spanish.
Neither reissue has a definite release date yet.
