The real-life, personally owned and used commode of recently deceased writer J.D. Salinger can now be yours, should you click the “Buy It Now” button on the toilet’s eBay auction. The catch is, of course, that the pricetag is a cool $1 million. But hey, you can make an offer too!
The toilet, made in 1962, is from Salinger’s New Hampshire home, and the seller promises it will arrive uncleaned—an apparent selling point here—and accompanied by a letter from Joan Littlefield, the new owner of the house who had the toilet removed. The ad encourages potential buyers to associate the toilet itself with Salinger’s success: “Who knows how many of these stories were thought up and written while Salinger sat on this throne!” it reads. Fair enough.
The item was put up for sale by The Vault of Forsyth Inc., a North Carolina group also selling diamond engagement rings, antique guitars, vintage signs and currency, though the toilet is by far their biggest-ticket item.
