HBO to Show Bruce Springsteen Documentary

Next month at the Toronto International Film Festival, fans of the Boss will get a behind-the-scenes look at the making of his fourth album, Darkness on the Edge of Town. The documentary feature making its debut at the festival is called, appropriately, The Promise: The Making of ‘Darkness on the Edge of Town.’

A re-issue of the album is set to hit record stores sometime this fall. The follow-up to Springsteen’s Born to Run, it was just as famed for the number of songs that didn’t make the cut as those that did; Rolling Stone talked to E Street Band guitarist Steve Van Zandt, who said that some new material has been dug up for the release. “We put ten or so outtakes on the 1998 Tracks box set and we [have since] found ten more,” he said. “I’m not sure how many we’ll put on there. We’ll go back and he might finish a lyric on one or two, or finish a harmony on one or two, but we’ll keep them intact pretty much.”

Footage that appears in the documentary was filmed from 1976 to 1978 while Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band were in the studio recording what would become Darkness. The Promise also includes a modern-day commentary on the album; Thom Zimny directed, collaborating with Springsteen on the project.

HBO, which has aired other Springsteen specials, plans to air the documentary sometime in October.
