Murmur Trestle, part of an Athens, Ga. railroad scope pictured on the back of R.E.M.’s 1983 release Murmur, might join a preservation effort as part of a trail if voters approve a capital projects sales tax.
Officials in Athens, R.E.M.‘s birth-grounds, say they’ll be unable to determine if Murmur Trestle will be included in the hiking and biking trail until the November vote regarding the 1-percent sales tax.
Athens-Clarke County purchased the wooden rail bridge in 2001 for $25,000 after railroad company CSX Transportation ripped down a portion of the R.E.M. fan-beloved structure.
The trestle isn’t currently included in the funded stretch slated to commence construction within the next few months.
