Shepard Fairey Immortalizes Joaquin Phoenix

Update: Paste reader Dane e-mailed us a photo he took of another Joaquin Phoenix street-art piece in Los Angeles. If you see one in your city, send a photo to news@pastemagazine.com and we’ll post it here.

His iconic Obama poster influenced Obamicon.me at the end of 2008’s election season. Now, Vulture reports that artist Shepard Fairey is responsible for bearded Joaquin Phoenix displays that have been spotted in New York, L.A., San Francisco and Boston, among other major cities.

The images have appeared just in time to promote the release of Casey Affleck’s documentary (I’m Still Here: The Lost Year of Joaquin Phoenix) on the retired actor/aspiring rap artist. The film is set to come out Sept. 10 and is reported to include lots of “on-screen weirdness (including a bizarre scene involving human feces and lots of male frontal nudity).”

Check out a mini-gallery of the three Phoenix immortalizations Vulture rounded up, plus a couple more taken by Paste readers Duane and JoannaO, below.
