ELO Cellist Killed by Rolling Hay Bale
A giant bale of hay struck 62-year-old Mike Edwards’ van while driving in Devon, England Friday, Sept. 3.
The bale, weighing in at 1200 lbs., somersaulted from an adjacent field and into the road where Edwards was driving. The crash involved another vehicle but no injuries were reported.
Edwards played a significant part in Electric Light Orchestra’s success, despite his short stay with the band. He constantly showed up in crazy outfits and invented new approaches to playing his cello (think: plucking and strumming with various citrus instead of picks).
He played with ELO from 1972 until he decided to leave the group in 1975 so he could better practice Buddhism, eventually changing his name Deva Pramada.
