In a recent interview with Spin, drummer Chad Smith revealed that the Red Hot Chili Peppers are experimenting with some African sounds on their upcoming album.
The change in musical direction was apparently inspired by a trip that he, Flea and new guitarist Josh Klinghoffer took to Nigeria, Ethiopia and Lagos recently. “That music just moves to a different groove, it’s not your typical Western four-four,” he told the magazine. “The rhythms are so infectious. We’re not trying to cop that thing, but we’re just doing our take on it. Hopefully we’ll come up with something new.”
The album is slated for a spring release, and it will be produced by longtime Chili Peppers collaborator Rick Rubin. Smith said he’s glad to be working with the producer again. “We really trust him,” he said. “He’s really helpful when you play him songs you’ve worked on for a long time — he hears them and he gives his objective opinion. He’s not emotionally attached to the songs like we are. It’s good to have that.”
