The Music Tapes Want to Play at Your House

Sorry, Jeff Mangum, but you’re not the only Neutral Milk Hotel member who’s got some exciting stuff going on.

Julian Koster, the former bassist and banjoist of NMH, is known for his unconventional choices in musical instruments and arrangements. It comes through in his experimental pop project The Music Tapes, for which he’s used a singing saw and even the sound of a bouncy ball as percussion.

A few years back, Koster brought his saw and some holiday cheer to our offices, where he performed some tunes as part of his month-long caroling tour.

The concept behind the tour was pretty simple: Invite Koster to perform at your house, and he just might! Now, the multitalented music man and some friends are embarking on a similar jaunt across the United States and Canada, bringing their dreamy, charming music to anyone who asks. (Or, the 200 households that ask nicest.) ”These sorts of trips are the most adventurous and exciting musical travels I have ever been a part of," says Koster of his somewhat avant-garde approach to touring. "There’s a special magic possible that could only happen in them. There is a warmth and kindness and adventurousness of the people inviting us and all of their friends that leads always to extraordinary and fun times that are unlike anything else we’ve ever experienced before.”

To invite these traveling bards to a place near you, send a convincing invitation to l"ullabyedeliveries@gmail.com":mailto:lullabyedeliveries@gmail.com, or a letter to:
