Independent freeform radio station WFMU (one of our 40 Best Little Radio Stations in the U.S.) has staged a benefit auction offering more than your standard promotional CD.
The station broadcasts at 91.1 in Jersey City, N.J., 90.1 in Hudson Valley, N.Y. and from WFMU.org everywhere else. It boasts the title of the longest-running freeform radio station in the country and enjoys a commercial-free format.
However, like everyone else, WFMU’s has to pay those bills.
In the station’s auction, which started yesterday and runs to Oct. 12, the items hold more significance than some lousy coffee mug. Supporters compete for the chance to perform on stage with Yo La Tengo (bids starting at $152.50), have tea for three with Magnetic Fields’ Stephin Merritt (bids starting at $100) and tickets to a sold-out Guided by Voices concert, among other prizes.
For a full list of what’s up for grabs, visit WFMU’s eBay site. There are a loaded 13 pages of goodies to peruse. Starting bids range from $10 various comic books and records to $600 with more prized loot like original John Fahey paintings. Bid now and bid often, y’all.
