American Idol to Move to Wednesday/Thursday Nights

In a move that’s sure to get rival networks talking and/or sweating, Fox has announced that the upcoming season of American Idol will air on Wednesday and Thursday nights, instead of on Tuesday and Wednesday as it has in the past.

This means comedy favorites like Modern Family and Community will now be going head-to-head with the ratings giant. The Wednesday night performance shows will also be expanded from an hour to 90 minutes. Are your favorite shows doomed? It remains to be seen.

The move was made in order to keep Glee in its current Tuesday-night timeslot, meaning Fox feels that show can pull in bigger ratings than the singing competition. Producers have completely revamped American Idol after the series brought it its worst ratings to date last season, bringing in Steven Tyler and Jennifer Lopez to fill open judge positions, turning the top 24 into a top 12 and adding weekly “challenges” that contestants must complete, including making their own music videos.

American Idol premieres Jan. 19 at 8 p.m. ET on Fox.
