In a joint press conference today, Facebook and MySpace unveiled a new MySpace feature called “Mashup with Facebook,” which will allow users to create a personalized stream of entertainment content based on their Facebook likes and interests.
MySpace will also soon be implementing the Facebook Like button on their site, indicating that its days as an independent social network are coming to a close. "Sharing entertainment and music interests is part of many of our friendships, online and off,” Dan Rose, Facebook’s vice president of partnerships and platform marketing said in a statement. “MySpace is giving people an easy way to bring their favorite bands, celebrities and movies from Facebook to create a personalized experience on MySpace from the start.”
MySpace recently overhauled its site, focusing primarily on music and entertainment. Last quarter, the website reportedly lost $156 million, and just last week CEO Mike Jones admitted that MySpace “is not a social network anymore.” This caused some to speculate that the struggling site would merge with Facebook, resulting in a Facebook Music page.
Others assumed that the two websites would announce search integration, which would mean that typing users’ names into the MySpace search bar would result in a link to their Facebook pages in addition to their MySpace profiles.
